The great part about having a website dedicated to the Army Cadets of Nova Scotia is that it encourages the youth in the various Corps to contribute their thoughts. Below you will find a thoughtful presentation on Vimy Ridge, written by Lance Corporal Niam Sharma. Well done Niam.
Vimy Ridge Day
On April 9th, 1917, thousands of Canadian soldiers advanced up the treacherous slopes of Vimy Ridge under harsh conditions, heavy enemy fire, and difficult terrain. Although they faced numerous challenges, they persevered and achieved a victory that would become one of Canada’s most significant moments in its history.
In remembrance of this battle, Vimy Ridge Day was created to honor and show gratitude towards the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. This battle took place during WWI in France to draw the German reserves away from French assaults and secure the northern flank. It also marked the first time that all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together as a single force. Their success demonstrated Canada’s strength and capabilities, earning recognition on the world stage.
This operation was also planned between the 4 divisions of the Canadian Corps. Each soldier had carefully planned their attack, while using detailed maps, drills, new strategies, and many other tactics to secure their win in this battle. When they started the assault, they advanced in waves, enabling them to capture the ridge from the German forces. Although the victory was significant, the cost was that 3,500 Canadian soldiers were killed, and many were wounded in these four gruesome days of the battle.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge is often seen as a turning point in Canadian history because it helped shape a sense of national pride and identity. It showed that Canada can stand on its own and succeed in a major international conflict. For cadets and Canadians today, Vimy Ridge Day is more than a date; it is a reminder of the courage, teamwork, and sacrifices that helped build the country. Additionally, many cadet corps hold special parades or lessons on the Battle of Vimy Ridge to educate cadets about battle tactics, objectives, and its impact on shaping Canada. By remembering this date/event, we can honor those who have fought in the battle and reflect on the importance of dedication and perseverance in our own lives.

During the month of February 2026 Army Cadets from 219 RCACC participated in a Standard First Aid Course. 219 has a Cadet who is training as the Cadet Correspondent. He submitted this article for the website. In the 219 Cadets lead Cadets and they produce their own stories. Well done to the Corps and their industrious Cadet Correspondent.

The first aid course was intended to equip us with the necessary skills to handle real-life situations. Throughout the course, I have not only gained the skills but also the confidence and sense of responsibility that I can apply when assisting people in medical emergencies. It is a good thing that I was able to take this course through the cadet program, as it is not always easy to gain access to this type of training.

During the course, we were taught how to administer CPR on infants, children, and adults. We were also taught how to use an AED and how to treat various types of wounds. These skills will definitely help me assist others in my community. Overall, this course has helped me develop lifesaving skills that will enable me to take charge in emergency situations.
